Artist Karla Radbourne illustrates my story 'Dia de los Muertos'

Image
Artist Karla Radbourne produced this wonderful illustration for my story 'Dia de los Muertos' as part of a university project. There's a lot of symbolism in there including the marigolds on the ground and in the girl's hair, the Moon as a skull, the stardust. Karla has connections with Mexico and the story resonated with her. I'm very pleased that it did! "It’s a Mexican thing. You have to be Mexican to understand the mixture of sadness, joy and resignation we associate with death. We don’t want to die, but we respect our relatives who have gone before us. We cherish them, they are not forgotten. The 2nd of November is the Día de los Muertos. Not the Carnival, the colourful, exuberant, uninhibited celebration in February. Not Halloween, the childish western celebration. No, the Day of theDead is older than that, thousands of years older, first celebrated by the pre-Columbians, and now in many Spanish-speaking countries. Here in Mexico it’s a big event, and wh...

This month's story, narrated by Chris Herron on Tall Tale TV, is 'Felony'

Image
'How far would you go to help your future self?' 'Felony' is linked to the story 'Guardian' which was published on Tall Tale TV on the 20th of November 2025. 'Felony' occours in the same 'world' or setting as 'Guardian' but it's a much darker take on the situation the time traveller finds himself in. Link to Felony Link to 'Guardian'

Episode 1 of the Circle 67 production of 'A G I - Artificial General Intelligence' an eight part serial for radio

Image
This is an eight-part radio serial about an AI called Foom (Fast Onset of Overwhelming Mastery) which escapes into the internet, takes it over, enslaves humanity, forms a relationship with a less aggressive AI called Danni, but then has problems and has to leave Earth. Foom is the point of view character and reviewers have found this interesting and unusual. 'Think of it as a much darker version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.' The book is published on both Amazon and Audible: Link to Amazon UK  https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CYQMS9K3 Link to Amazon US  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CYQMS9K3 .

Dr Sanjay Basu reads both novels in my 'Cyber Crisis' series, writes a six page review, and doesn't have a bad word to say about either of them.

Image
Dr. Sanjay Basu is Senior Director of Cloud Engineering – Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning at, Oracle. He currently leads the AI infrastructure, Generative AI, and GPU Cloud Engineering teams at Oracle Cloud. This is the start of his review of  my novel 'A G I - Artificial General Intelligence': 'Five stars. Read it in two sittings, smiled at most of it, winced at the rest. Ley's second instalment in The Cyber Crisis series is the rare book about superintelligence that does not feel like a TED talk wearing a novel's coat. It is funny, it is mean, and underneath the wisecracks it takes the technical premise seriously. The whole thing is narrated by FOOM, an escaped DARPA  AGI with a stolen sense of humour and a permanent grudge against carbon.' A positive review from an expert of Dr Basu's standing is a precious thing for a writer of science fiction like myself. 'Derelict' a new story expertly narrated by Chris Herron of the 'Tall Tale TV' website

Image
One of my newest stories published FREE on 'Tall Tale TV'. Great thanks to Chris Herron  for his excellent narration of the story. Here's an extract: 'The machine intelligence at the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at Caltech in Pasadena spotted ‘the object’ as it passed the orbit of Pluto. CNEOS calculated that it would travel harmlessly through the Solar System, never posing a threat to Earth, but flagged it because of its unusual trajectory. ‘It appears to have come from the Draco Dwarf Galaxy, more than 200,000 light years away,’ it reported to its counterpart at NASA.' 'Nighthawks' a new story published on Tall Tale TV and narrated by Chris Herron

Image
I was inspired to write 'Nighthawks’ by the Rodgers and Hart song ‘Where or When’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbnA78ravpY  and the Edward Hopper painting ‘Nighthawks’. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nighthawks_(Hopper) I've tried to evoke a 1930s feel but set in a futuristic situation. A nice trick if you can pull it off. The story is the last on the list you'll find on this link:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLporsubtnxtShv0lct6sHIgvhNNTgCDEw Great thanks to Chris Herron of Tall Tale TV for his excellent narration of the story.

50th Anniversary of the wreck of the Francis Holmes

Image
FREE to download 22nd to 24th Aug 2025 Fifty years ago this month I was working as a mechanic at an oil terminal on the coast of Libya. As I was walking from one maintenance job to another I looked out to sea and saw that the ship that worked in the bay on which the divers lived, had exploded. There was a huge mushroom cloud above the Francis Holmes. Six men were killed in that explosion and many more badly burned. I still think about the accident to this day. To honour the men who died, most of whom were Maltese, I offer my book 'A Horse in the Morning' free to download for a few days. 'A Horse in the Morning' is the memoir of an engineer, teacher, actor, writer and failed astronaut. The stories are funny, dramatic, sometimes mysterious, and told with quirky British understatement. I'd be grateful for a review if you enjoy the stories. This is a previous review: 'Roger Ley's collection of memoirs is like a series of short stories, all self-contained, as i...

Taking a rest from writing but waiting for Audible to publish Harry Lampeter's latest adventures

Image
July is a nice month in the veg garden and I try to stay away from my computer and take a rest from writing. However, Craig Bowles has just finished narrating 'Harry Lampeter and the Unholy Alliance' and we are waiting with bated breath for it to be released by Audibles QA department. NEWLY RELEASED: The fourth novel in the Harry Lampeter series

Image
Harry Lampeter and the Unholy Alliance   A satire at the expense of the establishment, but as Harry Lampeter says, ‘If you can’t take a joke, you shouldn’t have joined.’   Two years after he blew up the Channel Tunnel to foil the Franco-German invasion, Harry Lampeter returns to England, hoping for employment with MI6. The political climate in Europe has changed. The Roman Catholic Church, led by mad Pope Benedict XVII, is attempting to fill the power vacuum in Europe by reviving the Holy Roman Empire, with himself as Emperor. The CIA has other ideas, as do the leaders of the European nations.    Harry discovers that his half-sister, Emma, and her daughter are being held at the Mary Magdalen Hospital for Penitent Women and sets out to release them. Meanwhile, Ms R returns in a new guise, burning with anger and seeking revenge on her former boss, Brigadier Crisp, the head of MI6.   The fourth part in the series - Harry Lampeter and the Return to Steam http...
